Star Charts: Instructions v1.0 · 31 Oct 2026
5150 is a game by Ed Teixeira, published by Two Hour Wargames. Please support Two Hour Wargames by buying their products. Star Charts follows the rules for mapping the 'Verse and charting a system in 5150: Known Space (p.4–17). You'll need the book to play.
1. Quick start
- If a Job says where you're going, set the Ring and Sector; otherwise leave them on Roll.
- Press Chart a system.
- Press Cities beside an inhabited planet to see its cities, settlements and Areas.
2. Where it is and who owns it
Known Space has nine Rings, from the Core (Ring 1) to Fringe Space (Ring 9), each split into eight Sectors. A rolled Ring and Sector follow the book's Where Is It? rolls; the System number is just a label. The owner comes from that Sector's Who Owns It? table, and the Alien Faction tables when it says so. The roll is shown in brackets.
3. The planets
A 6 means a binary star. There are 2d6 planets (halved for a binary), listed from the star outwards, and drawn in a line: ● Class 1 garden world, ◐ Class 2 marginal world, ○ Class 3 uninhabitable, ∷ Class 3 with an Asteroid Belt, ◍ Gas Giant. There are no Gas Giants in the inner half of a system. A Gas Giant can have up to three large moons, some of them worlds of their own, and gives free fuel.
4. Who lives there
Each world rolls its Population (POP, +1 with an Asteroid Belt), then its Economy (by POP), then its Law Level (by Economy). The owners' race then changes Law and POP (Hishen +1 Law, +1 POP, and so on). Each inhabited world gets the book's code: Ring / Sector / System / Class / POP / Economy / Law. New Hope is 3/4/2/2/2/T/2.
For now: races the book's modifier list doesn't cover (Kurgen, Khang) have none, and the Bugs' printed "1 Law" counts as −1.
5. Cities and settlements
How many cities and settlements, and how many Areas each, depend on the planet's Class and POP. The first Area of each is always a Star Port (the transit hub); there's only ever one City Hall in a city. The Areas match the kinds in New Hope City, so the Encounter rules work there too.
6. Keeping your charts
Your last 30 systems are kept in this browser: press one under Charted systems to see it again. Save log (.txt) saves them all as text. The Trade Calculator can buy and sell at their planets. A drawn map is planned for later.
