Guided Character Creator: Instructions v1.4 · 1 Nov 2026
5150 is a game by Ed Teixeira, published by Two Hour Wargames. Please support Two Hour Wargames by buying their products. This tool walks you through making a Star for 5150: New Beginnings, one step at a time, in the order the book does it. You'll need the book for the full rules: every step gives its page.

1. Using the terminal
- The bar under the title line shows every step. The highlighted one is where you are; the filled ones are finished. Click a finished step to go back to it.
- The screen prints a readout of your answers so far, then the current step: what to decide, a short note on the rule, and the book page.
- The Your choice row holds the answers for this step. Pick one, or press a dashed Roll button to let the dice decide, as the book allows. The dice rolled are shown on the screen.
- Press Next > when the step is answered (it stays dim until then). < Back goes back one step and keeps your answers.
- If you go back and change something earlier (your race, say), the steps that depended on it are cleared so they can't contradict it, e.g. a new race clears your rolled Attribute and portrait.
2. The steps
- Star (p.6–7): you're the Star, Rep 5, with three Star Advantages.
- Race (p.8–12): one of the six Major Races. Zhuh-Zhuh also choose Tall or Muggie.
- Gender (p.8–12): fixed for Grath, Hishen, Razors and Xeogs; otherwise choose or roll.
- Class (p.13–16): Mover, Shaker, Exotic, Joe (Service or Labor) or Criminal Element.
- Profession (p.13–16): choose from your Class's list, or roll 2d6.
- Attributes (p.17–18): Basics roll one and choose one; other races keep their Race Attributes and roll one. You may drop a rolled Attribute you don't like, but then you have one fewer.
- Skills (p.18, 21): People and Savvy. One equals your Rep (5), the other is 4.
- Gear (p.22–27): a new Star takes anything they like. You can also roll your career band (p.26): the level you're likely to retire at, which doesn't limit starting gear. Then choose a weapon, ammo and armour. Razors and Xeogs never wear armour.
- Enhancements (p.28–35): Basics only. Sensory, Physical, up to three Loops, a Stim, or Psy. Press None or Done.
- Home (p.27, 74): your Area of New Hope City. Home costs Decreasing Rep d6 equal to the Area's Law Level − 2 each month (the tool uses the daytime Law Level).
- Name: type one or roll one, and pick a portrait that suits your race.
- Ship (optional, from the supplement 5150: Shipyard): by the book a new Star has 0 Lifetime Rep d6, so no ship. If your group lets new Stars start with some, choose Start with Lifetime Rep d6, type how many, and use the Shipyard Broker right there. What you spend comes off your starting Lifetime Rep d6, the ship goes in your Vehicles, and it's put on the Ship Sheet when you open your Star in the Character Generator (it asks first if another ship is there).
- Finished: a summary of your Star.
3. Checkpoints and saving
- Every time you press Next >, that's a checkpoint: your progress is kept in this browser. Close the page and come back, and it carries on from your last checkpoint.
- Save progress downloads your progress as a file (
name.guided-character.json). Load progress reads it back, on this or any other computer. - Start again clears everything and goes back to step 1.
- Nothing is sent to the website: progress stays in your browser and your files.
4. When you're finished
- Your sheet appears below the terminal: all three pages, with PNG page 1 (2, 3), Print / PDF and Editable PDF buttons, exactly as in the Character Generator.
- Open in Character Generator takes your Star to the Character Generator, which asks before replacing the character it's showing. There you can add Items and a Band and keep it up to date.
- Download save file saves your Star as
name.5150.json, which the Character Generator's Load file button opens. - Your Home Area and career band are written in the sheet's Notes.
- Make another starts a new Star.
