Gear Shop: Instructions v1.1 · 31 Oct 2026
5150 is a game by Ed Teixeira, published by Two Hour Wargames. Please support Two Hour Wargames by buying their products. The Gear Shop follows the book's rules for getting stuff (5150: New Beginnings p.21–27). You'll need the book to play.
1. Quick start
- Open your Star in the Character Generator, then press Use the Character Generator's Star here.
- Pick the Area you're shopping in (or set the Law Level yourself).
- Press any item to see if you can get it, what it costs and whether it's legal here.
- Press Buy: it goes on your Star's sheet. Add the cost to this month's Decreasing Rep d6.
2. Your level
There's no money in 5150: what you can get depends on your Lifetime Rep d6 (p.25–27). The shop shows what your level gives you: its weapons, armour, Enhancements, robot and ride, and the Quality modifier for using your gear (−1, none or +1 Rep). With no Star loaded, type a Lifetime Rep d6 to look things up.
A new Star starts at 0 Lifetime Rep d6, which the book's table doesn't cover: for now it counts as the first level.
3. What it costs
- A weapon costs 1 Decreasing Rep d6 per point of Target Rating the first time: P-1 = 1, B-2 = 2, A-3 = 3. Soft Body Armor costs 1; Hard Body Armor costs 3 (p.25).
- Weapons and armour above your level cost +1 for each level you're short.
- Vehicles, ships and robots come with your level: their kind (a motorcycle, a Hull 4 ship…) is set by it. A vehicle costs 1 a month to keep and a ship 1 per Hull point a month.
- Melee weapons, packs, briefcases, Drones and Spacesuits: if you want one, you have it (p.21).
- Mercenary registration costs 3, after a non-negative Interaction with the Police (p.22).
4. Is it legal here?
Each Law Level allows different weapons, armour and Enhancements to be carried openly (p.22). If what you want isn't allowed where you are, the book says you must play a Chillin' Encounter and make a Deal to get it (p.76, 80); and if the Police see you with it, they may Question you and take it, or Arrest you (p.106). The shop warns you and asks before buying.
5. Buying
- A weapon can be your main weapon (your old one goes into Items) or carried as an Item. Armour is worn (old armour goes into Items).
- Everything else goes into Items. Remember you can carry Items worth twice your Rep.
- Reload the Character Generator to see the change on the sheet.
- Save log (.txt) saves every quote and purchase as text.
6. The Shipyard counter
From the supplement 5150: Shipyard. Below the gear is the Shipyard Broker: buy, lease or steal a ship, buy a used one, sell or trade in your ship, sell salvage from a wreck, or claim a ship you captured. Ships are paid for in Lifetime Rep d6: what you spend comes off your Star's total, and the new ship goes onto the Ship Sheet and your Star's Vehicles. See the Shipyard Broker's instructions for the rules it follows.
7. In the Guided Campaign
The Guided Campaign has a Shopping step after the start-of-month upkeep. It uses the same rules, adds the cost to that month's Decreasing Rep d6 for you, and starts a new vehicle's or ship's upkeep from the next month.
